Every time you turn on the news you hear about the price of oil going up. Threats of embargoes, political instability in the Middle East and the other year we saw the effect that major hurricanes could have on oil prices due to supplies being disrupted. Car Care Company feels there isn’t a thing we can do to protect against those things but there are some other steps we can take to lower our fuel bill.
One thing people don’t realize that is easy, is to keep your windows up. The friction or drag caused by keeping your windows down uses more gas than air conditioning in most cases.
At the same time, use your air conditioner sparingly. The AC compressor drags down your engine and will have a big negative affect on your gas mileage.
Avoid jackrabbit starts and stops; this is one of the biggest culprits of poor fuel economy. Accelerate normally and don’t ride bumpers.
Keep your car tuned up and running properly. A vehicle that is misfiring and not in optimal running condition will burn a lot more fuel. You also want to keep your tires inflated at the proper pressure, if not this will hurt your fuel economy. Several vehicles today, like some Nissan models for example, have inflation sensors that warn you when the air pressure is getting low. Be sure not to over inflate though, this will hurt your gas mileage as well.
Don’t keep your vehicle loaded down with unnecessary items that weigh it down, and increase wind drag. Those of us at Car Care Company with trucks and vans are particularly guilty of this in many cases. If you aren’t using stuff then remove it from your vehicle.
Don’t leave your engine running when you are just sitting still. If you run into a convenience store resist the urge to leave your vehicle running. If you get stuck in traffic and it isn’t moving turn your car off until it starts to move again.
Don’t run the highest priced gas in your vehicle. Most vehicles today are built to use regular unleaded gasoline. Be sure to check your owner’s manual but chances are if you are spending money on the high dollar gas you are just wasting your money.
If you work outside the home and have a fair distance to drive, do what some of us workers at Car Care Company have done and get together with other co-workers and have a car pool so that you can all share the cost and cut down on the wear and tear on your individual vehicles.
If you live close to the destination you want to go to, the corner store for example, walk or bike instead of hopping in the car. It will save gas and help your level of fitness at the same time.
Car Care Company wants to see you save as much as you can on gasoline, so we hope that these few suggestions have been helpful during these difficult times with the world economy.
